Alfred Pennyworth first appeared in Batman #16 (1943), as Batman and Robin's butler.

Alfred is far more than a domestic servant; he's Bruce Wayne's confidant, legal guardian, and a surrogate father figure, especially after the death of Bruce's parents. He provides unwavering support for Batman's mission, tending to injuries, maintaining equipment, and offering strategic advice. Alfred often provides much-needed humour and emotional grounding amidst the darkness of Gotham City.

Before serving the Wayne family, Alfred had a background in acting and medicine, with some versions implying military service or intelligence work. This diverse skill set makes him an invaluable asset to Batman's operation. He’s adept at first aid, skilled in hand-to-hand combat, and possesses a dry wit that often cuts through the tension. He is fiercely loyal to Bruce, acting as the moral compass to keep him from crossing certain lines.
